Bring Your AAA Mecha Game to Regular Human Basketball
Imagine this scenario: you’ve been working full time for a year on this new game that people are anticipating. It looks great, you’re feeling good, people are digging it. It’s awesome, but you’re so tired you gotta take a break from it. So you do that. You take a 2 week break and then come back with Regular Human Basketball.
The crowd goes wild.
David Lloyd and Barney Cumming are the two brains and four hands (maybe?) behind Aussie indie dev team Powerhoof, currently working on Crawl, a multiplayer dungeon crawler where one player controls the hero and other three control the traps and monsters in the dungeon to try and bring him or her down. Check it now on Early Access on Humble or Steam.
Regular Human Basketball is an exercise in patience as you first get into it, but once you figure out how to pilot that 2-wheeled, magnet-armed colossus, whether playing 1 on 1 or with a full team of 5v5 (never tried it and have no idea how would that work with controllers), it’s a fun game.
The controls are quite simple, using QWOP or keyboard arrows to jump, move or operate the buttons in the robot, which include the magnet to grab the ball, the thruster rockets to dunk and the wheels to roll up to the court. It even has joystick support, but I couldn’t make it work on my Mac before writing this.
Aside from that I was digging the totally human and surprisingly accurate match commentary, and you gotta admit this music loop for the game by Feeding Time is dope af.
I sure hope this weird local multiplayer sports game trend becomes a thing. I want to backpack around the world again and show this game to some strangers in hostels.
